Margin
A business clarity tool for freelance designers

Overview
Most tools built for freelancers record what happened. They don't tell you what it means. Time trackers show hours. Project boards show status. Invoicing tools show what you sent. None of them connect the dots and tell you whether the work was worth what you charged
Margin was brought to Moken to fill that gap. A business dashboard for independent designers and creatives that reads across your projects, your time and your clients, and tells you in plain language what it all means.

The challenge
The client came to us with a specific frustration. Freelancers are not short of tools. They are short of clarity. The data exists, it sits across time trackers, spreadsheets and invoice folders, but nothing pulls it together and tells you what it means. Which clients are worth keeping. Which types of work pay well. Whether the hours you logged were worth what you charged.
The brief asked for something genuinely different. Not another dashboard to remember to open, not another chart to interpret, but a product that does the thinking and delivers the answer in a sentence.
The hardest design problem was restraint. A data product wants to show everything. The brief demanded the opposite: one insight, clearly stated, at the right moment.

What we built
Margin tracks four things: projects, time, clients and how each piece of work felt. That last dimension is what makes it different. When you close a project, Margin asks one question: how did this one feel? Three options, ten seconds, skippable. Over time the pattern becomes the most useful signal in the product.
The "What Margin Sees" feature does what no other tool in the category does. It reads your data and writes a sentence. Not a chart to decode. A sentence you can actually do something with.

What we built
The Monday morning email lands with your effective rate, one insight and one thing worth doing differently. It was designed to feel like a message from someone who has looked at your numbers, not a report from a dashboard. Most freelancers have told us it is the most useful email they get all week.

Design approach
The visual language is deliberately quiet. A warm off-white ground, a single ultraviolet accent used sparingly, refined serif typography throughout. The product should feel like a considered publication, something a designer would be proud to have open on their screen.
Restraint was a design decision applied to every layer of the product. Every colour, every piece of copy and every data point on the dashboard was either earning its place or removed. The comparison at the heart of the product says it plainly: Other tools record. Margin reads.

How it was built
Margin was designed entirely by the Moken team in Figma and built entirely using AI, specifically Claude Code. No traditional development team, no lengthy sprints, no handoffs.
What would previously have taken months of development time and significant budget was taken from brief to live product in weeks. The design quality is uncompromised. The speed of build is something we could not have achieved two years ago.
We think this is important for our clients to know. The tools available to product teams right now have fundamentally changed what is possible. Margin is a live example of what a well-designed product can look like when AI-assisted development is directed by a team that cares about the craft.
